Bug Hunt

Sci-Fi Action Movie Wargaming

For many years I’ve wanted to try and re-play those epic battle scenes from the classic sci-fi movies like Aliens, Terminator and of course Starship Troopers.

Previously I’ve used various rules systems but mainly used the now extinct Prodos AVP Unleashed rules system.

Out of all the rules I had tried, AVP Unleased was the closest to scratching my itch but there was something that just didn’t quite sit right with the rules, they felt a little clunky. And to prove this point Prodos had to draw up numerous confusing flow charts to help explain their convoluted system.

After playing lots of AVP Unleashed games with some good gaming buddies we soon started to home brew lots of various rules.

Eventually this homebrew set of rules emerged just like a facehugger and has now completely taken over the host rulebook.

The game system we play (nicknamed “BUG HUNT” is similar to the Prodos game in the sense that each model uses action points and players will also be rolling D20’s but the rest has been reinvented and it is much more user friendly getting those dramatic gaming results we all enjoy as a group.

Here area a few pictures from various test games we’ve had of the scenario that will be appearing on the gaming circuit.

Winning and losing isn’t the focus here. The idea is to play out those exciting moments of these great sci-fi action films and create an explosive narrative. Soldiers will be battling against the odds and ultimately sacrificing themselves to potentially save others as their window for victory withers away.

Inevitably one side is likely to be horribly surrounded and outnumbered as their impending death creeps towards them. Therefore this rule set has purposely been tailored for a more theatrical asymmetric gaming experience keeping in focus the final key moments of an previously ongoing grand scale conflict.
